In November of 2001, sons and daughters of Tappita District and their friends and well-wishers in the United States of America gathered in Minneapolis to consider what they can do to help their native land and to reduce the level of suffering of their unfortunate family members and relatives they left back home. In that conference, it was decided that an organization be formed that would coordinate the efforts of the members in the Diaspora to renovate and/or rebuild the destroyed infrastructures of their home District.

Since then, we have met annually and have criss-crossed the continental US in our efforts to reach to every Tappita citizen in the country with the message of self-help and self-sustainable development. We have been to Providence, RI, Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, Atlanta, GA and this year we are returning to Minneapolis, the city where it all started. Since our formation, we have successfully completed several projects including the renovation of Tappeh Memorial High school, the only public high school in Lower Nimba County and the Voice of Tappita Community Radio Station – winner of the 2007 Community radio station award in Liberia. In collaboration with other NGOs and the Government of Liberia, we have also completed two junior high schools, 4 elementary schools, 3 clinics, and the Immigration Office in Tappita.

Since our last convention in Atlanta, GA, our organization has embarked on more ambitious projects in continuance of our vision and mission. This year, we intend to provide more practical help to our partners and other citizens within the District who are laboring daily to make the dreams of our young people come true. According to Mr. Sam G. Kpahn, Executive Director, the projects the organization will undertake this year include:

Library and Learning Center: We will continue our quest to build a modern library, equipped with resources to engage and encourage learning. The Center will also provide access to the Internet, and provide other technological services including photocopying, word processing, scanning, desktop publishing, etc.

Shipment of Books: Ship our second consignment of books to the schools in the District. Our first shipment was met with great enthusiasm and provided much needed resources to the future leaders of our District.

Scholarship for Nursing Students: In July, 2010, the GOL dedicated the JF Doe Referral Hospital in Tappita. We continue to admonish the government to also invest in the local population so as to fill the professional needs of the Hospital. TADDA has been working with and encouraging a Tappita citizen at the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine to strengthen his commitment to return to the Hospital to serve. In this same regard, TADDA, in collaboration with other institutions of higher learning in Liberia, plans to provide at least 10 scholarships to Tappita Citizens who would attend nursing schools and return to Tappita to serve.

Dress a Teacher Campaign: TADDA will be shipping loads of clothes (new or gently used) to be distributed to the teachers in the School District in appreciation for the sacrifices these honorable men and women have done and continue to do within the District.

The citizens of Tappita District and our friends in the Diaspora have been very generous in giving. It is our hope and expectation that these goals, as set above will be achieved. Please join us in Minneapolis, MN July 8 – 10, 2011 as we celebrate our 10th anniversary.
